Legacies from Our Favourite Mums to Their Kids

Legacies from Our Favourite Mums to Their Kids

Our favourite mums give their insights on the legacies they’d like to leave to their children.

This Mother’s Day, our mums share their thoughts on leaving their legacies behind for their kids. These include their parenting philosophies, their work ethos, and the lessons that they want to pass on to their children.

Aside from being mums, these women are also founders of one - or more - thriving businesses. They share what legacies mean to each of them personally. Rather than just a fiscal inheritance, their legacies include their varying approaches to parenting, what they'd like to achieve in their fields, and also precious lessons to impart to their children.

Mother of one, Melody Yap is co-founder of Ms.Kinny and founder of Ember Collective. Melody Yap

Melody Yap, mother to baby Eva, has co-founded Ms.Kinny and founded Ember Collective. Ho Su Mei

Drawn to design, art and handmade objects, Ho Su Mei always felt a desire to start something design or experience-related, and hence founded Sea Apple. The mother of two wanted to explore ideas not traditionally associated with childrenswear, and focus on the mood, motivation and thinking behind a print. Of course, the garments are also top quality, made with a double jersey fabric - interlock - that is knitted from 100 per cent GOTS organic cotton.

Sabrina Tan

Sabrina Tan, founder of Skin Inc and mum of two. iloveskininc

After a decade marketing computers and software in the IT industry, Sabrina decided to switch careers to find effective skincare products to treat her sensitive skin conditions. She started Skin Inc with a customised approach blending beauty with technology. Potential customers first complete an online Skin Identity Check giving essential information on their lifestyles and skin condition. They’ll receive a custom-blended serum with different active ingredients. Skin Inc products are available at two skin supplement bars in Singapore, as well as retailers and e-tailers.

Velda Tan

Velda Tan, founder of Collate The Label and co-founder of Our Second Nature, and mother to a lovely daughter. Velda Tan

Velda Tan, founder of Collate The Label and co-founder of Our Second Nature, is also a mother of one. The designs for both labels are different - Collate The Label focuses on a clean and chic aesthetic. Meanwhile, Our Second Nature works with a London-based print designer to create designs in vivid tones, and in floaty fabrics to reach out to a wider community of women.

What type of mother are you?

Jaelle Ang: I am affectionately known as the Tabby Cat mother who practices being warm and demanding. I’m an Aspiring Tiger mother who lacks the time and home and stomach for it.

Melody Yap: I want to be an open-minded mother. I want Eva to explore the world freely, to make decisions on her own and be responsible for them, and while doing so, I will be rooting for her silently and be there for her if she falls.

Ho Su Mei: I'm more of a play it by ear type of mum, not afraid to get my hands dirty with the kids, and hoping to create experiences with them they can look back on fondly. I also rely very much on the help of others to get the mum work done, it is a never ending job!

Sabrina Tan: I know for sure I don’t want to be a helicopter-type mother. I believe in letting my kids learn and fail and thrive. But I am certainly a mother that gives an abundance of affection, hugs, kisses and definitely gifts.

Velda Tan: I think I’m a pretty chill mother! I’m usually really busy at work trying to meet deadlines, so when it’s time to be a mom, I’m as relaxed as can be.

What legacies would you want to leave behind in your fields?

JA: When I was 12, I wrote on a piece of paper what I would want on my tombstone. “She always played her heart out in the field, taking long shots and braving bruises. She was never on the sidelines.”

MY: I want women to know that self-care and self-love is so important. They can still dedicate time to taking care of themselves despite being caught up with motherhood; they can still look and feel confident!

HSM: That we did good design - connecting with others with authenticity and emotion.

ST: Legacy of innovation - that we’re the first to marry tech and beauty, fearlessness, and push boundaries.

VT: I hope to be able to add meaning to everyday lives with my brand Our Second Nature, and to positively impact those around me.

What lessons would you like to pass on to your children?

JA: I feel the most important skill for my children would be auto-didacticism; the ability to learn and unlearn quickly to solve problems we don’t yet know of. I hope they will always have courage - the courage to be bad at something new or difficult, the courage to start, the courage to never quiet and the courage to pause when required.

MY: Do everything with a kind heart and a clear conscience. Never hesitate to lend a helping hand to those who are in need. Love animals with all your heart. To be able to give is a blessing; do as much charity work as you can

HSM: Strive always for something bigger than yourself, ideals are worth fighting for. Be compassionate and kind - gentleness can do wonders in a harsh world. Do not be afraid of getting things wrong, turn those fears into energy to do better next time. In everything you do, do it well, even when no one is looking. Be goofy. Live fully.

ST: To love others as yourself is important but certainly not an easy feat. But we strive to be better each day. It’s powerful as it solves many society’s issues. Importantly, it spreads love and hope.

VT: I pray that they will always be kind, and I plan to impart that by being an example.

Another way in which mums can create legacies is to chronicle their baby’s journey, from their time in the womb all the way to their first year and beyond. To do this, Motherswork, Bynd Artisan and Dr Ann Tan have collaborated on a personalisable My Beginnings Baby Journal
